5 Great Day Trips Within a Short Drive (or Click) of Meadowood

With its sprawling 131-acre campus nestled in the heart of Montgomery County, Meadowood is convenient to many fascinating cultural attractions, historic sights, wineries and outdoor adventures. You’ll find plenty to see, do and experience with friends and family within a short drive of the campus.

Due to restrictions in the area related to COVID-19, most of these places have either temporarily closed or limited operations for safety reasons. Fortunately, many have also incorporated virtual experiences into their offerings so that visitors can still enjoy them during the current situation.

Here are five amazing attractions close to Meadowood that you can explore online now (and in person soon).

1. Elmwood Park Zoo — 8 miles from Meadowood

Located just minutes from the Meadowood campus, Elmwood Park Zoo is a smaller zoo that’s big on innovative exhibits. You can hand-feed the zoo’s giraffes and bison, meet canary-winged parakeets and tropical sun conures in the interactive Birds of Paradise exhibit and wave to the newborn jaguar cubs in the brand-new Trail of Jaguar exhibit. A highlight for kids and adults alike is TreeTop Adventures, a ropes and zip line park.

Enjoy it virtually: Elmwood Park Zoo is currently closed to the public but is bringing the animals to your living room through Facebook Live broadcasts. And right now, you can even add an animal to your weekly meeting or family video call!

2. Longwood Gardens — 36 miles from Meadowood

These renowned public botanical gardens boast over 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows. Not only does Longwood Gardens offer breathtaking horticulture and landscaping but also classes and workshops, live music and theater performances and rotating exhibits.

Enjoy it virtually: Although the gardens are closed to the public right now, you can experience their beautiful flowers and plants through “Our Gardens, Your Home” — stunning imagery and video of what’s in bloom now, as well as engaging online classes, performances and activities for all ages, plus virtual visits of public gardens around the country.
