The First Dimension: Physical Wellness

I would like to start our in-depth look at MEADOWELL and the Six Dimensions of Wellness by talking about the Physical Dimension of Wellness.

According to the National Institute of Wellness, “Optimal wellness is met through the combination of good exercise and eating habits… The physical benefits of looking good and feeling terrific most often lead to the psychological benefits of enhanced self-esteem, self-control, determination and a sense of direction.”

Time and again here at Meadowood Senior Living, we see firsthand the benefits of nurturing the Physical Dimension of wellness. We are invested in creating opportunities to improve your physical health at all levels. Making it fun is an added benefit!

Our 8,000-square-foot Fitness and Wellness space holds two pools (a 50-foot lap pool and a jetted therapy pool); a cardio room with treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent and upright bicycles, and a rowing machine; a fitness studio for aerobic exercise, dancing, yoga, spin and balance classes among others; and a weight room appointed with all the equipment you need to keep your body strong and healthy.

The outdoor areas of campus are ripe with fitness opportunities, too. A wooded walking trail, bocce court, shuffleboard court, horseshoe pit, and a fitness patio all serve to enhance al fresco fitness experiences.

However, as you know, state-of-the-art facilities are only part of the equation. Our knowledgeable, friendly staff completes the fitness experience at Meadowood. Qualified and credentialed personal trainers, lifeguards, a wellness coach, and an experienced specialty fitness staff offer more than 45 classes weekly. They range from chair aerobics, water walking, gentle yoga, and Ta’i Chi to shadowboxing, spin, Pilates and advanced boot camps.

Specialized classes for those with unique needs, such as Parkinson’s In Motion, DrumFIT, Conductorcise, Sit N Fit, and many others take place in our Health Center. Personal training, wellness coaching, open weight rooms, and campus-wide special events round out our fitness offerings.

The bottom line? Wherever you are on the fitness continuum, we have something for you.

Now, let’s talk about the other piece of the Physical Dimension, nutrition.

Monthly cooking demonstrations in the pop-up dining room are a resident favorite. The Fitness and Wellness Staff partners with the resident-run CREAM program and our nutritionist to prepare and share delicious food and drinks. Our most recent programming highlighted one “superfood” each month by pairing a delicious (and healthy!) recipe with a brief talk about the nutrition benefits of that food.

Our Wellness Wednesday talks frequently feature topics on food and nutrition as well. And of course, as a certified wellness coach, I can provide you with plenty of information on how to improve your eating for maximum health and wellness.

While it’s easy to let the Physical Dimension of Wellness fall into disarray, improving your physical health is one of the best ways to increase the longevity and quality of your life.

We can help you do it. In the Fitness and Wellness Department, it’s not just our mission, it’s our promise!

Until we meet…
