Memory Care Expansion

Our New Memory Care Neighborhood Is Underway!

We’re excited to announce that the McLean Memory Care Community, our new state-of-the-art expansion, is moving forward. Meadowood President and CEO Paul Nordeman presided over the groundbreaking ceremony on June 14, and progress is moving quickly.

Why Are We Undertaking the Memory Care Project?

According to the World Health Project, dementia is a serious and growing health issue for those who are aging. Currently, 5.8% of the population (approximately 50 million) of those 60 years or older face this issue, with projections increasing to 82 million by the year 2030 and 152 million by 2050. As a premier senior living community, Meadowood recognizes the serious nature of this condition and has developed a plan to enhance the lives of those who are living with memory issues.

After five years of extensive study, site visits and consultations with experts, Meadowood has embraced a distinctive design for a 22-residence Memory Care Center as part of a comprehensive master plan for the next decade.

A Unique Environment that Reflects Nature and Humanity

Designed by award-winning RLPS Architects, both single and companion Memory Care residences will be placed around the perimeter of two beautifully landscaped courtyards. Recent global research suggests that people living with dementia who are exposed to gardens, nature and greenery have improved moods and slower progression of symptoms. Meadowood is on the cutting edge of turning this research into practice; one expert we consulted noted there is “no other place in the world that is implementing similar concepts and structure as the Meadowood facility.”

Nurturing the Six Dimensions of Wellness

This new neighborhood will provide a calm and soothing environment where our residents can maintain as much independence as possible in a safe setting. Residents will benefit from a supportive team of care partners, complete with planned programs that will encompass the six dimensions of wellness, activities of daily living and gracious dining experiences. Eight to 10 activities will be offered daily, including music programs, live entertainment, games, socials, family events, pet therapy, spiritual services and wellness services. Office space will also be designed for those used to “going to work.” Professional staff will be trained in the GEMS Positive Approach to Care philosophy of Teepa Snow, a renowned dementia expert. Each person’s dignity will be valued and their uniqueness celebrated.

Through this neighborhood, which is unlike any other in the world, we can touch many lives in the coming years, not only by providing state-of-the-art care for our residents, but peace of mind for their families.

Why Are We Fundraising for This Project?

Not only does national data confirm that Memory Care is an essential need, our residents overwhelmingly have agreed that a Memory Care Center is the highest priority healthcare enhancement at this time.

In order to bring this vision to life, we must raise additional funds. We would like to honor people that care deeply about this project — and those they cherish — by providing naming opportunities that will permanently reflect their commitment to this project.
