Meadowood Honors Bill Black at Founders Day Celebration

The 2025 Founders Day Award recognizes 26 years of service and leadership on Meadowood’s Board of Directors.

Meadowood honored longtime Board member Bill Black as its 2025 Founders Day Awardee, recognizing his 26 years of service and the steady leadership he has provided through periods of challenge and growth.

Founders Day is an annual opportunity to reflect on Meadowood’s beginnings and recognize people who have carried its mission forward: “To provide the highest quality of life for all who experience the Meadowood community.”

In his remarks, President and CEO Paul Nordeman recalled meeting Black in December 2006, when Black chaired the committee searching for Meadowood’s next executive director. Nordeman arrived with concerns about the organization’s recent leadership turnover, but Black’s thoughtful questions and authenticity left an immediate impression.

“Bill left a lasting impression that day—one that has remained with me throughout my entire Meadowood journey,” Nordeman said.

Black served eight of his 26 years on the Board as Chair. During his tenure, he helped guide Meadowood through low occupancy, financial strain and the housing crisis. He championed an update to Meadowood’s mission, vision and values, chaired the development of its 2016 and 2024 Master Plans, and led the Building Committee at various times for more than a decade.

“His leadership has never been about position or visibility,” Nordeman said. “It has always been about people—our residents, our board, our staff, our families, and those who would someday call Meadowood home.”

Nordeman also recognized Black’s wife, Karen, for the care and encouragement she has provided throughout his years of service.

Meadowood established Founders Day in 2016 to honor its founders, Bill and Sylvia Strasburg, on the 30th anniversary of the community’s March 3, 1986, groundbreaking. Each year, the celebration recognizes individuals who embody the spirit and values of Meadowood.

“Today’s award is not simply a reflection of years served,” Nordeman said. “It is a reflection of how you served—with humility, wisdom, steadiness, and a genuine love for Meadowood and everyone who is part of it.”

Congratulations, Bill, and thank you for your lasting commitment to the Meadowood community.
