Senior Fitness Made Personal: Plans for Mobility and Vitality

Senior Fitness Made Personal: Plans for Mobility and Vitality

Have you ever struggled through a fitness class and wondered how you’d ever make it to the end alive? Or, have you ever been so unchallenged you thought you’d die of boredom before it ended? Or maybe you’ve never even taken a fitness class?

Put three people in a room together, and all of these statements could be true. Unfortunately, that’s what many older adults face when they move into a community. Fitness is either a one-size-fits-all endeavor, or it’s a do-it-yourself proposition.

At Meadowood, we get it. Not everyone fits a mold when it comes to physical activity.

That’s why we offer dozens of classes, do-it-yourself equipment, and off-campus opportunities to stay fit and healthy—at your own level and pace.

Our calendar of classes is a patchwork quilt of green (beginner), blue (intermediate), and red (advanced) strength, cardio and flexibility classes—at least one a day of each. From resistance band workouts to co-ed weight lifting, from Tai Chi to spin classes, and from water walking to water yoga, we aim to offer something for everyone.

Even if you’re not a joiner, we’ve got opportunities. The cardio room is chock full of all kinds of machines for beginners and more advanced exercisers. The weight room, too. And both are open 24/7.

If gym-type activities are foreign to you, or you’re not motivated to exercise on your own, our personal trainers can guide you through your workout and even stretch you afterwards. If you’d like to work out with your spouse or friend with a trainer, you can do that, too. And for those who have a health condition that makes exercise a challenge, our targeted small-group training could be the thing. We offer low-cost group training for those living with Parkinson’s, arthritis, and osteoporosis.

Post physical-therapy exercise is a specialty of ours as well. We have many personal training clients who come to us when their PT is finished, but they want to continue on with their regimen, and beyond.

If none of these tickles your fancy, but you love team sports, we’ve got a water volleyball team, a wiffle ball group, and memberships to a pickleball court and golf course.

We know movement and exercise is important, no matter your age. Its benefits don’t diminish as you get older. In fact, it becomes even more important to stay active in order to maintain muscle strength for balance and bone density, cardiovascular health for your heart and lungs, and flexibility for your joints. There is strong evidence that people over 65 who exercise regularly significantly lower their risk of chronic illnesses like Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, to name a few. But it’s important to form exercise habits you’ll stick with.

We love to guide our residents to fitness opportunities that are perfect—for them. So, if you’re one of the three people in that room mentioned above, we’ve got what you need.
